Over the past year, the political and economic situation in the world and in Russia has worsened, and we continue to face various, including new, challenges. The RusRisk International Professional Forum, held on September 14-15, 2023 in Sochi (Golden Tulip Rosa Khutor Hotel), was devoted to discussing new challenges and prospects for the development of risk management in Russia over the 20 years of RUSRISK’s activity.
It was attended by more than 80 heads of risk management departments and risk managers of industrial, insurance, investment and brokerage companies, teachers and representatives of government authorities, the expert community and the media. An online broadcast of the Forum was also organized, which was used by more than 120 participants.
The Forum was supported by well-known companies and organizations: B1-Consult LLC, Guardia Insurance Company JSC, Insurance Broker Elbrus LLC, MMC Norilsk Nickel PJSC, CCI of the Russian Federation, the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Committee on Industrial Policy and Technical Regulation, as well as the International Interfax Group, the Prime Economic Information Agency, the magazineProblems of Risk Analysis”, Expert RA Rating Agency, Risk Management magazines. At the opening of the Forum, special guest Anton Pavlovich Shalaev, Head of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart), made a speech. He analyzed the state and prospects for the development of technical regulation and standardization in our country, as well as the activities of technical committees for standardization, including Technical Committee 010 “Risk Management”, supervised by RusRisk.
Panel discussion 1 “Corporate Risk Management in Russia: Present and Future” (moderated by Yuri Kostenko, Director of Risk Management at AFK Sistema PJSC) was devoted to practical issues of risk management in Russian companies. An interested and professional discussion took place on the following issues: A risk-based approach to business processes – Artem Kurbatov, B1-Consult LLC; Risk management in corporate governance: what the Board of Directors needs to know about risks after sanctions are imposed – Irina Andropova, RusRisk; The current state of project risks – Alexander Tsvetkov and Dmitry Virkunen, PM SOFT Group; Members of the Board of Directors and others involved in the implementation of civil liability risks in the context of a liquidity crisis amid sanctions – Yulia Belyakova, ANO DPO IKAR; Counterparty risks in corporate risk management – Alexey Buzdalin, Interfax Economic Analysis Center.
Panel discussion 2 “Current issues of standardization and certification in the field of risk management” was held jointly with the members of TC010 at Rosstandart. Its moderator was Victor Vereshchagin, President of RusRisk and Chairman of TC010.
During the discussion, the following issues were discussed: training and certification of risk managers (Vitaly Matyushin, Federated Insurance Company), the activities of the RusRisk Certification Center (Tatiana Shemyakina, RusRisk), the current state and current issues of standardization of project risk management (Sergey Oparin, Emperor Alexander I St. Petersburg State University of Railways), the role of TC010 in the development of business standards and the application of new national standards “Assessment of the quality of an organization’s Risk Management” and “Risk Appetite and Key risk indicators” (Yulia Burdina, Russian Institute of Standardization; Evgeny Telenkov, PJSC “Vimpelcom”).
At the end of the first day of the Forum, the Panel discussion 3 “The impact of risks and sanctions restrictions on the organization of insurance protection of companies from the point of view of the policyholder, broker, and insurer” (moderator – Andrey Runov, Insurance Broker Elbrus LLC). The problems of the impact of sanctions on the organization of insurance protection of industrial companies (Artem Abaidullin, JSC “Guardia”), the role of insurance broker in new market conditions (Andrey Runov), an interactive map of insurance risks and opportunities for planning insurance protection of large companies (Larisa Sachenko, LLC “Risk Profile” and Anton Vorobyev, LLC FINEX).
On the second day of the Forum, the Round table discussion “Building risk management in large corporations: strategies for success and failure in recent years” (hosted by Irina Andropova).
The most relevant issues were selected for informal discussion: strategic and operational interaction of internal control and risk management; experience in implementing and implementing risk management functions in companies under pandemic and sanctions restrictions; risk management in mega-projects; digitalization of operational risk management processes; risks and opportunities of information and cyber security; comprehensive assessment risks related to financial relationships with counterparties. Practical cases were also considered: Gazprom Neft’s practical experience in risk-based approach and business continuity management; risk-based approach in Norilsk Nickel’s IT infrastructure; features and preventive measures in risk management in the mining industry.
Renowned practitioners from various sectors of Russian business were invited to discuss these issues.: Yuri Kostenko (PJSC AFK Sistema), Anna Gagarina (PJSC Gazprom Neft), Alexander Kalashnikov (PJSC Alrosa), Alexander Shchukin (Volga-Dnepr Group of Companies), Artem Tymko (RAOS Project Oy), Andrey Zakharov (SPARK Interfax), Anton Shishov (PJSC MMC Norilsk Nickel), Vladimir Golovanov (JSC Infotex) and Elena Ilyina (LLC RANK2). Greetings were sent to the Forum participants in a remote format. Vladimir Gamza – Chairman of the Council on Financial, Industrial and Investment Policy of the CCI of the Russian Federation and Andrey Shishakov (Moscow State Medical University “Skolkovo”).
In general, the discussion of the most pressing issues of risk management and insurance at the Forum should help RusRisk to respond more effectively to new challenges and relationships with government agencies, Russian and foreign partners.
As part of the RusRisk Forum, the winners of the annual “Best Risk Management in Russia” competition were awarded in six categories. In the nomination “For the overall contribution to the development of risk management in Russia” Nikolay Ivanov (Expert RA Rating Agency) was recognized as the winner, and in the nomination “The Best Risk Manager of the Year” Irina Andropova won. The Forum once again confirmed the interest of the business community in the effective use of the accumulated risk management and insurance experience in our country and the world and the availability of considerable reserves for developing new approaches and tools to overcome emerging problems.
